Garden Toes

 A creative writing essay

Title: But At Least We Ended At Commodore Club And Alex Picked Up The Kids

Sad news. Today I lost both my toenails. I already told Kate, poor Kate. I bruised them somehow during garden party and today was their last day. I now have pink toes with no nails. I’ve never experienced anything like it. I now have kid band aids for toes. No pain, if anything relief, all the pain was the week after I wore my red suede Parisian 1.5” pumps to a spring event. I had to because it matched my bold lipstick. My options are bandaids or alien for the rest of summer. What will the ladies at Pilates think when they learn I am actually an alien.

I knew it was going to be a problem when Alex couldn’t find his mint velvet bow tie from our wedding in Sicily tucked away somewhere where we will never, ever lose it by never, ever finding it after the intercontinental shipping container move.

It’s in the most lost nostalgic box.

I knew it was going to be a problem when we hopped out of the uber before even turning down wrightsville, to hobble across the church yard gravel, following some old ladies who parked illegally to pass in front of the two hours of cars. The shoes went on, and the immediately interviewed me for the fashion statement. Literally on camera for 2mins because they said I was so fashionable. And then I realized maybe I wouldn’t be walking soon.

I should have known better when I left in the Rivian truck with someone’s posh mom and got the ride to commodore. I think a kid was in the car. Or a dog. Maybe a dog?

And at commodore I ordered baked oysters but they served me raw and no one even ate the last two. And we ended up getting invited in a sunset yacht sail home. And now I’m just truing to remember whose mom it was. And then my husband appeared and took us home. With the kids. In the car. After school.

Everything was ok until my toes awoke and turned all the colors. Blisters on the back yes but on the toenails too? I hadn’t ever experienced leather like that up front of a shoe. I’m blaming pandemic. I’m blaming pregnancy. I’m blaming humidity. And now I’m a lovely alien.
